The Earth graphic's an eight bit PNG file. Eight bit PNG files require less memory when prepared with solid contiguous areas of color, horizontal strips of color and no dithering. Therefore the gradation changes color along the vertical axis and water is one solid color.
PNG formatted images, prepared correctly, display with more clarity than JPG images. JPG compression blurs colors and values. The higher the compression rate, the blurrier the image.
